A lovely lady who had just moved into her new home had found that her key was very difficult to get into the lock of the garage, and she was worried it may snap very soon. I arrived to find the handle was indeed very stiff and difficult to get the key in the lock. I applied a bit of lubricant to the keyway and that made all the difference. I couldn’t charge her for such a simple job, so she was extremely happy with the simple solution and how reasonable I was in the situation. Hopefully she’ll be back for some other work.

I arrived and managed to remove the key and found that there was a twisted cam present – which happens when a key has been left inside the door and someone has tried to get in the house while the key is still on the inside of the lock. Having had to take their bins out all the way round the street for weeks, a couple decided enough was enough and asked me to remove their broken lock and replace it with something that allowed the gate to be used once more. I replaced the lock with a long-throw bolt lock for their gate, which could be locked from both sides. An urgent call to me was made due to a door not being able to be unlocked as the handle was just spinning on a composite door. I arrived quickly to help as there was a fire risk with only one way out of the house. I managed to gain entry to the door and found that the gearbox had shattered due to excessive force; one of the top bolts had become jammed. I supplied and fitted a new centre and top gearbox which sorted the problem out, and realigned the door to enable smooth operation. One relieved customer!

I received a call from a customer who couldn’t lock his door when leaving the house, however was able to lock the door at night from the inside. I arrived to find that the barrel had virtually completely seized from corrosion on the outside of the door lock, but was ok on the inside. I attempted to use graphite to get the barrel working again but to no avail and therefore had to change the barrel over for a new snap-proof lock. An access door to a garage had got stuck and the key wouldn’t turn in the lock, preventing access to the garage. The customer rang to book an appointment, but I was just round the corner from him so managed to pop straight round after the job I was finishing. The lock needed to be removed as it had seized completely, and was replaced with a British Standards High security deadbolt and all completed in about 20 minutes. One happy customer!

Due to the rising crime in the area, a couple were wanting to get a lock that would secure their back garden. The gate was used frequently, especially by the children, so they wanted something that would lock from both sides. Reported by her son that he’d got “caught by the wind” a mother had phoned me to see if I could help sort out the snapped key in the patio doors of her house. Being the wrong time of year to have a window stuck open and the recent icy blast coming in off the North Sea meant that this Landlady’s tenant was desperate to get some help with her bedroom window. A very amused lady rang to say that her husband was stuck outside the house in the rain after going for a paper without a coat; he couldn’t get back in the house as the door was just stuck shut. She couldn’t operate the rear patio door as that was too stiff for her, or so she claimed! But she was able to warn her husband to take a coat – advice which he obviously ignored!!! A distraught chap rang to see if I could help as he’d somehow managed to get his front door jammed closed. I arrived to find that the door locking mechanism had jammed with a small piece of metal dropping from the gearbox when I took it out of the door. I found that he had a very big pin in his lock which was constantly jamming his key and stopping him get his keys out. A call from someone who was looking online for a “locksmith near me” and came up with my details. They had a key lost by a workman who had been in their outhouse where their boiler was, but now they couldn’t get into the room. I gained entry to the outhouse and swapped out the lock for a new high security British Standards sashlock and gave it a good testing. All sorted and a much safer lock fitted!

A chap called to ask if I could help fix his sliding door as it couldn’t be locked. Unfortunately, the door he had was using an obsolete gearbox which had failed. We decided the best course of action would be to put a couple of security bolts into the moving side of the door to make it secure, as it was an internal door and the conservatory had a very good lock on the external door anyway. A lovely young couple had just moved into a terraced house whose windows were not in the best state. They needed some attention and looked for a “locksmith near me” on Google, and found me! They showed me round the house and I managed to sort all the windows, either by replacing the handles where needed, tightening the securing screws, or in some cases freeing up the mechanism and lubricating them thoroughly.

A couple rang who had not been able to get into their garden to water the plants during the hot weather as their door handle had stopped working on their conservatory doors. I opened the door quickly to find the gearbox had broken and the handles had nothing to operate on as the spindle casing had broken. A frantic lady called to see if I could help rescue her dog from her locked kitchen door – it seemed the latch could no longer work and was jammed in the door. Once I arrived I managed to manipulate the latch out of the door keep and opened the door, only to be smothered in appreciation by the giant labrador called Honey. A first time to be covered in honey on a job, or any other time for that matter! A very happy couple to be reunited once more!

We were asked if we could come sort a door out which couldn’t be opened all of a sudden. I arrived quickly and managed to open the door as quick. I found that the latch on the door had stopped working and wouldn’t retract. A lovely lady asked me to help her family against further lock-outs, as had happened over the weekend, and for me to try sort her door. Once I’d stripped the door down, I found that the door’s gearbox was failing and seizing every now and then. A landlord had been searching for a “locksmith near me” on the web and found my name right at the top of the search, which was great. He wanted to get his tenant’s kitchen door sorted as it was looking like he couldn’t lock it properly. I saw that the whole multipoint lock (MPL) had seized and needed replacement due to a broken part. I put an emergency gearbox on the door and ordered the replacement for the MPL, which I fitted the next day.

A local cycle recycler called as he was locked out of his unit, which was used to recycle bikes. I arrived to find that the bottom bolt on his roller shutters had seized with corrosion and had to remove and replace it, which I did inside 15 minutes. Someone had told me that they were looking for a “locksmith near me” online and came up with my profile. After reading the lovely reviews that my customers left, she decided to give me a ring as she had issues with her back door and couldn’t lock it. I arrived to find that the latch had become unable to retract in the gearbox and the door was therefore difficult sometimes to lock or unlock. I arrived to find that the latch had failed on the door handle so had to gain entry to the door and free the cat. A chap rang who had a flat which paid a complete homage to the 60s/70s music, along with an old stack of tape cassettes which resided in an old shop rack; however, the key no longer worked and it needed looking at. An unusual job indeed, however I quickly managed to get the rack open for the delighted music lover and found that the key he was using was the wrong one! Never mind, problem solved and rack opened and the music blasted out once more!

Two girlfriends called me to say that one of them had gone to put a letter into their box and unfortunately dropped their keys back into the house. I arrived quickly to help them out and managed to use my endoscope with a powerful magnet on the end to locate and pick-up the keys quickly. A chap rang me as I’d done some work for him previously for his business. His wife was having issues closing and opening his porch door and she couldn’t get the door to lock properly. I’d found once I’d arrived that there was an “inverted cam” on the lock, which means it was likely that someone had tried to unlock or lock the door while a key was still in the other side. Although it is possible to dismantle the lock and repair, the time taken makes this uneconomically viable to the customer, so I changed the barrel over quickly and provided the customer with the standard 5 keys to go with the new lock. A very happy customer and relieved wife who could now operate the door lock easily!

A pizza shop-owner rang frantically asking if I could help him lock up his pizza shop after the lunchtime opening. Of course I could help, and arrived just before the stated time. All three of his shutters had failed, which I thought very suspicious as they were “keyed alike” ie, they all opened up from the same key. I asked if there was a second key somewhere, which indeed there was and the owner’s brother was quick to arrive with another key. Voila, they all opened with the other key. As I thought the owner’s key had been damaged and failed to open all the shutters all of a sudden. I cut the owner 3 spare keys there and then and he seemed like he’d won the lottery with the work I had done for him!

Badly fitting door very difficult to lock, Willington Quay, NE28, 28th March 2022

A kebab shop in Willington Quay rang to see if I could do something with their ill-fitting door which had become very difficult to lock and unlock. I arrived to find the door had dropped significantly due to the amount of use it had and it was on a spring, so had done quite a bit of slamming! I quickly managed to sort out the hinges and loosened the springs on the load arm so the door wouldn’t slam also. One happy kebab shop owner and a free kebab for me! Mmmmmmmm, my favourite!!

Allotment gate locked closed, Wallsend, NE28, 21st March 2022

The manager of the local allotment in Wallsend rang to say none of his gardener tenants could get into the allotment as the gate lock had failed. I arrived quickly to assist. I managed to free-up the lock and replaced it with a new key code lock from stock I was carrying on the van. So pleased were the allotment holders that I not only got paid but got a free bag of tomatoes to boot!!

A nice gent who kept some impressive tooling in his shed wanted to have some improved security on his shed after realising how much equipment he had inside the building. After understanding that the shed had extremely strong walls and it was the door that was the weakness. I fitted an extremely strong door defender across the bottom of the door and a bar across the middle, secured by high security padlocks. No way anyone getting in there quickly or quietly!

A pleasant chap rang looking for a locksmith in Willington Quay as his mother’s front door lock wouldn’t lock fully on her uPVC door; she was very concerned that the door would remain open during the night. I told them that I’d have it sorted and that they would be safe for the night. I quickly found that the lock had seized and attempted to free it up with some lube, but to no avail, it was properly stuck! I freed the lock from the housing and swapped the lock for an upgraded snap-proof, insurance approved lock, leaving the mother and son in a happy place!

A family had taken their dog out but their door had locked behind them, but when they tried to get back in their key wouldn’t work anymore!! I tried to open the door without force but found that it had seized, so asked if there were other ways to get into their house. I quickly managed to open the window but luckily, I had my window pads on the window, as the top hinge had corroded so badly that the window was ready to fall out of the frame upon opening. A shop manager asked us to look at a door which wasn’t closing properly as it was “crunching”. We quickly called out to find that the door pivot had given way. We removed the door and replaced the pivot and realigned the door.

After being contacted on Facebook for an owner of a Post Office, we attended to survey the issue described to us. The door was indeed stiff to open and needed to have new pivot hinges on the top and bottom of the door. We quickly changed the hinges and made amends to the tension on the door.
