Lock Identification Worthing

Want to change your locks but not sure what type of lock it is? Lockforce Locksmiths Worthing can help you identify any lock type over the phone or through picture messaging. Here is a brief guide to the 3 main types of locks you will find on your property….

Euro Cylinder - This lock is very common. They are installed on uPVC and composite doors that have multi-point locks. You will also find them on garage doors, sliding patio doors and sometimes on mortise locks in a wooden door. Euro cylinder come in different variations. Single euro cylinders will be found mainly on garage doors, double cylinders (key/key) on residential doors and thumb turn cylinders on multiple occupancy properties. As well as different variations, they have differing standards. They can be standard or 1,2 or 3 star rated locks. The star ratings can be found on the lock under the key insertion point. These standards will be based on the level of security the lock offers (anti-snap, anti-pick, anti-drill and anti-bump). A 3 star rated TS007 British Standard lock has the highest security rating.

Mortise Locks - These types of locks are commonly found in wooden doors and are usually referred to as Chubb locks. There are 2 main types, a dead lock and a sash lock. A dead lock has a bolt only and a sash lock has a bolt and a latch, with the latch being retracted by using a handle. Mortise locks are most commonly 2,3 or 5 levers. 2 or 3 lever locks are for the use of locking internal doors. On external doors, Lockforce Locksmiths recommend British Standard BS3621 5 lever mortise locks for home insurance requirements. To see if your lock is British Standard, just check on the faceplate on the side of the door. If there is a kite mark (heart shaped log), then it is British Standard .

Night Latch - Most commonly known as Yale locks. These are installed onto wooden doors. Internally, you will have a case fitted onto the door, with a latch engaging into a keep onto the door frame. Externally, you will find a round lock (rim cylinder) and this is where the key is inserted. These locks are additional security on an external door (with a mortise lock) and also used for bedrooms on multiple occupancy homes. Most night latches provide an easy exit, as in the event of an emergency, a key is not required to open the door. There are deadlocking, non-deadlocking and auto deadlocking night latches which offer different security options. Lockforce recommend British Standard night latches on external wooden doors for security and home insurance compliance.

At Lockforce Locksmiths in Worthing, we do not supply anything less than an anti snap Euro cylinder. This gives you substantially more protection than the standard Euro cylinder.

We also offer the ultimate in lock security with the Brisant Ultion TS0007 3* BS3621 cylinder lock. The Ultion locks come with a £1000 guarantee and a 10-year warranty with the lock manufacturer covering you against the functionality of the parts.

Lock Snapping

What is lock snapping? This is a destructive technique a potential intruder may use. This involves a Euro cylinder lock (pictured) being snapped in half inside your external door. This snapping technique requires only average force to the cylinder lock by using common DIY tools (mole grips, pliers etc). Once the lock has snapped, it can be removed from the door and this allows access to the gearbox mechanism which can then be unlocked and access can be gained to your property. Lock snapping can all be done in under ten seconds and requires little skill.

If you have a multi point locking system installed in your external doors, you could be at risk to your locks being snapped. To minimise this risk, you can make your home more safe and secure by installing anti-snap (snap safe) locks. In the picture below, the 2 locks on the left are basic snap locks. The 2 locks on the right are anti-snap locks. As you can see, they have a snap line visible. This snap line sits within the recess of the door, so if the lock is snapped off, only the end part of the lock will snap off. This will leave your home protected from this technique of burglary.

If you have any concerns about the standard of your locks, contact Lee at Lockforce Locksmiths Worthing today on  01903 299 129

Home Insurance Worthing

Do your locks comply with your home insurance? Have you checked? Have you read the small print?

As a homeowner, you should be aware that most home insurance companies require your locks on external doors to be insurance approved and meet the British Standard (BS3621 TS2007). If your locks in your home do not meet this standard, then it is extremely likely your home insurance will be invalid in the event of a break in, and they will not pay out. Please do not put yourself and your possessions in any unnecessary danger and check your locks today.

If your lock displays the following logo (like a kite mark) then it is a British Standard lock. In the image below, you will see an insurance approved deadlock.

If you are unsure, please contact Lockforce Locksmiths Worthing today to help keep you safe and compliant. We offer you a  FREE home security survey to ensure your property meets all the necessary home insurance requirements and we can advise you on any improvements or upgrades needed.

Overnight car intruder in Patching – 10th January 2020 - Worthing

Job - Customer had their wallet stolen out of the car in their driveway.

Front door jammed in Worthing - 2nd January 2020

Job - Composite door would not open when pulling handle down.

Solution - Lockforce Locksmiths in Worthing attended the property in Findon. The front door was unlocked but the hooks in the multi-point locking system were not disengaging when pulling the handle down. Lockforce used a non-destructive technique to open the door by creating more space within the door frame and releasing the hooks from its ‘keep’. The door could now open. It was then noted the multi point locking system was faulty. Lockforce made the door temporarily safe with an overnight lock. A replacement part was ordered and was installed the next morning. The property is now safe and fully secure.

Commercial property requiring security upgrading in Worthing - 5th December 2019

Job- A shop owner in Findon called Lockforce, asking for security recommendations between their shop floor and the warehouse.

Solution - Lockforce Locksmiths in Worthing attended the commercial premises. Lockforce recommended a push button digital door locking mechanism on the wooden door separating the shop from the warehouse as the best security solution. Digital locks can be coded, meaning the owner can choose a memorable password for gaining door entry. This also means the staff do not require a key for entry, they just need to push in the correct code and turn the knob handle. Lockforce installed the mechanism and the shop owner now has a safer and secure shop floor!

uPVC Rear Door not locking in Broadwater - 14th October 2019

The hinges and keeps were adjusted and the door now closed smoothly. With this customer being proactive, the expense was low.
