I served 8 years in the Armed Forces, followed by 19 years working in various IT security roles. For most of my career, I’ve worked within the security sector in one form or another. Lock Identification Chester
There are typically 3 types of popular locks that are seen on most homes, Euro cylinders, rim cylinders and mortice locks.
Euro Cylinders
Euro cylinder shape is similar to that of a light bulb, bulbus at the to and thinner at the bottom. These type of locks are probably the most common style of lock found in the uk at present and are found in UPVC, composite, metal and wooded doors as part of a multipoint lock system mechanism but can also be seen as part of a mortice locking system. Euro cylinders come in a variety of configurations:
- Key key - where a key can be used on the inside and the outside
- Key thumbturn – Key on outside and a thumburn on the inside, usually found on properties with only on exist/entrance but are being seen more now on all new builds
- Euro half cylinder – most commonly seen on garage doors
They also come in a variety of standards:
- Standard Euro cylinder – when key is inserted the cam rotates to engage the locking system as there is no addition levels of security these are susceptible to lock snapping
- Anti snap locks – as above the cam is rotated when the key is inserted but they also have snap lines which sit within the door so if there is an attempt to snap the lock, just the end will come off and the remainder of the lock with stay preventing access to the locking mechanism.
- British standards rated locks – these come with star ratings 1, 2, and 3 with 3 star being the highest rated and most secure. The 3 start locks come with snap lines but also with additional security such as the Brisant Ultion 3 star lock which also has a lock down mode where if triggered, pins will be engaged into the cam to prevent it being turned. British standard lock rating is TS007 and will come with the British kite mark on
Mortice Locks
Mortice locks are commonly called dead bolts or locks, they are most commonly seen in wooded door but can be seen in other types of doors in conjunction with a euro cylinder
There are 2 main types of mortice locks:
Sash mortice - consists of a sash (some times called a latch) which is engaged by the handle and a bolt which is engaged by the key.
Dead lock - just has a bolt which is engaged by the key. They come in a few variety of standards:
- 3 and 5 lever Non BS (British standards) – these lock do not conform to a British standard
- 5 lever old BS – This mortice locks conform to BS3621 but are dated prior to 2007
- 5 lever BS – These mortice lock conform to the latest standards which is BS3621:2007
Rim Cylinder
Rim cylinder locks are usually seen as part of a night latch and are commonly called Yale locks. They are most commonly found on wooden doors. When the key is inserted and turned a tab turns which engages the nigh latch and retracts the latch from the door keep, on the inside there is a handle or thumbturn to open the door
They come in a couple of varieties:
- Non British standards – a basic night latch which may or may not have dead locking functionality usually accompanied with a mortice dead lock
- BS – A British standards night latch will have to kite mark present and will have additional security plates on , they will all have deadlocking facility
