Types of Lock

The Euro Cylinder lock is now the most common type of door lock found in the UK today.  It is used in both UPVC and Composite doors but can also be fitted as a Mortice deadbolt or Sash lock in a wooden or metal door.  The lock works by aligning pins inside when the correct key is inserted therefore allowing the central cam to turn and operate the Multipoint Locking System inside the door to enable opening or locking. Do bear in mind that all Euro Cylinders are not equal; they range from a basic lock, an Anti Snap lock and then on to TS007 rated 1 star, 2 star and 3 star with 3 star being the highest standard currently available.  Here at Lockforce we fit Anti Snap lock cylinders as our minimum standard with the option available to upgrade to the excellent Brisant Ultion 3 star which comes with protection features such as Anti Pick, Anti Bump, Anti Drill along with a lockdown mode which locks the central cam in place should a burglar have got that far as the very sight of one of these is a usually enough deterrent to an opportunistic thief!

Anti Snap Locks

A standard Euro Cylinder type of lock is vulnerable to a method of attack known as “lock snapping” commonly used by opportunistic burglars due to the speed of access. The burglar applies pressure to the lock causing it to snap at its weakest point (the middle) allowing the lock to be removed and the door to be opened in a matter of seconds. If you have a standard Euro Cylinder in a UPVC or Wooden door then it is at risk from this type of attack and you should consider upgrading your lock. At Lockforce we fit Anti Snap (also known as snapsafe) cylinders as a minimum standard. The replacement cylinder has a snap line which is hidden in the door recess once fitted. If a criminal tries the snapping method of attack on an Anti Snap cylinder then the lock will fracture on the snap line which leaves a large portion of the cylinder in place and the door will remain locked keeping you safe.

Night Latches & Rim Cylinders aka Yale Locks

Much like the way we all call a vacuum cleaner a “Hoover”, Night Latches are very often referred to as “Yale” locks as this is a common brand of night latch in the UK. This type of lock usually has a round face on the exterior of the door and is most likely to be found on a wooden door. On the inside of the door you will usually find a release that can open the door without the need for a key (unless British Standard Insurance Approved version) so that in flats or houses of multiple occupancy it is an easy means of escape in the event of fire. The design is such that when the door is closed it will automatically lock by means of a latch locating into a keep on the door frame. This design does however make it quite easy to lock yourself out of your house. If you have this type of lock fitted to your front door that doesn't need a key to exit (British Standard) then it must be fitted in conjunction with a Mortice type deadlock lower down the door to comply with insurance company requirements unless the other interior doors of the property have additional locks fitted.

Thumb Turn Lock fitted in Willaston CW2-26th March 2024

The relatives of an elderly couple needed a solution so that carers could access the property easily. Lockforce Crewe recommended and fitted a high security British Standard 3 Star rated police and insurance approved thumb turn lock so that keys weren’t needed on the internal side eliminating the risk of a key being left in and disabling the external side of the lock. 

Front door stuck at a bookmakers in Crewe, CW2 - 25th August 2023

Lockforce Crewe received a call from a local betting office when customers were unable to get through the front door. We were on site in 30 minutes and soon had the door open and a new lock installed from the vast stock carried on the Lockforce van. 

Keys lost by removal company in Nantwich, CW5 - 7th July 2023

A Lockforce Crewe customer called us in to assist when the removal company had lost the keys for a mahogany writing desk and a beautiful 19th Century German sewing machine. Lockforce got both items opened non destructively leaving the customer very happy indeed.

Front door well and truly shut in Crewe, CW1 - 26th June 2023

A cry for help came to Lockforce Crewe when a customer couldn’t open the front door from inside or outside. It turned out that due to poor alignment of the door the extra pressure exerted on the locking mechanism had caused it to fail. Once the door was opened and the new locking mechanism fitted the door was aligned correctly to prevent the same from happening again. Its always cheaper to have your door aligned before the damage is done.

Front door failure in Crewe, CW1 - 5th May 2023

Lockforce Crewe got a call from a client who was unable to lock their front door. On inspection it was found that the Multi Point Locking mechanism had completely failed. Lockforce replaced the unit with stock carried on the van and the customer chose to upgrade the lock cylinder to and Insutace Approved item for peace of mind.

Worn out lock in Shavington, CW2 - 24th March 2023

Lockforce Crewe got a call from a customer who was having intermittent problems with his front door lock. It turned out that the cylinder was simply worn out. A new snap safe cylinder was fitted on the spot from the stock carried on the van and the door won’t give any trouble again for some years.

French Doors brought back to life in Nantwich, CW5 - 20th February 2023

Lockforce were contacted by a homeowner in Nantwich who couldn’t open his French Doors causing a major inconvenience when the dog needed a wee. Once they were open it was clear that the mechanism had failed due to the doors being mis-aligned. The mechanism was replaced and the doors lined ups properly to ensure that the problem wouldn’t occur again.

Failed front door in Crewe, CW2 - 14th February 2023

Lockforce Crewe came to the rescue for a client in Crewe when the multi point locking mechanism on their front door failed with the door firmly locked. Once the door was opened it was clear that a complete new unit would be needed. A temporary repair enabled the client to used the door until the new locking mechanism was fitted the next day.

Key snapped on moving day in Haslington, CW1 - 6th February 2023

A couple who were moving out of their house managed to snap off a key in the back door lock. One call to Lockforce Crewe and we were on site within 30 minutes and soon had the lock fixed and the door working ready for the new owners to move in.

Locked out in the snow Crewe, CW1 - 17th January 2023

New locks on Timber Doors in Nantwich, CW5 -19th December 2022

The owner of a beautiful home in a very pretty village near Nantwich called upon the expertise of Lockforce Crewe when it was time to replace the worn out locks on their front door. As the doors were hardwood and extremely expensive Lockforce were able to track down matching replacements for the existing locks to avoid having to chisel away at the doors. Now they have brand new locks and no signs of the work that was done.

Locked out in Calveley, CW6 - 12th December 2022

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe were quick to respond when the former neighbour of an elderly gent called to report that he had been locked out of his house in the freezing weather. The door was opened fast to get the customer and his wife back inside for a warm up and while chatting it turned out that he used to be a very accomplished rally driver-I could have stayed for hours but there were more clients waiting for me!

High security lock upgrade in Crewe, CW1 - 14th November 2022

The owners of a brand new home called upon Lockforce Crewe for some advice about the standard of the locks fitted to their property. On inspection it revealed that although above the usual standard of lock fitted to new build houses, there was a potential weak point on the front door. Lockforce upgraded the cylinder to a 3 Star Police and Insurance approved lock and left the customers feeling safe and secure.

Lockforce Crewe received an early evening call from a family whose front door just wouldn’t open. We were on site within 30 minutes, got the door open and diagnosed that the Multi Point Locking mechanism had completely failed. Fortunately, the correct parts were on the van, so the door was back up and running in no time. I also had a little helper who dressed up as a pilot, a fireman and a chef-a very busy chap indeed!

A local solicitor called upon Lockforce Crewe to assist when their office doorbell failed. Lockforce sourced a more suitable replacement unit and even set it up so that the colours of the LED lights matched the office chairs!

Locked out in Crewe, CW2 - 10th October 2022

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe received a callout from a young man who was locked out of his house and car. With spare keys for the car at home, Lockforce met him at the property and gained entry through the back door so that he could get his spare car key. A customer called Lockforce Crewe out because the key was just spinning in the front door and it wouldn’t open. This is a fairly common problem with the mechanism that was installed on the door, so once it was open Lockforce conveyed the keyway to a conventional lock cylinder for better reliability.

Dogs locked in the house in Crewe, CW1 - 17th September 2022

Lockforce Crewe were called by a customer who had locked his keys in the house leaving his two dogs inside and his wife was at the other end of the country with her set of keys. The house was well protected with Insurance Approved locks but Lockforce soon had the door open and the dogs back out in the garden.

Front door failure in Wollaston, CW5 - 31st August 2022

A concerned client called in Lockforce Crewe when he could only lock his composite front door from the outside. After a quick check, the puzzle was solved and the door had its control gearbox replaced with stock from the van.

French Doors failed in Crewe, CW1 - 23rd August 2022

A concerned homeowner called Lockforce Crewe when the French Doors on their freshly renovated bungalow failed. Although the house had a front door, the failure of the only other exit was potentially a risk in case of fire. Lockforce got the door open in no time and found that the locking mechanism had given up the ghost. With new handles, a snapsafe anti snap lock and a new control mechanism the doors were as good as new and the customer very happy indeed.

The neighbour of an elderly lady who had locked herself out called in Lockforce Crewe when another locksmith had kept them waiting 2 hours and than let them down. Lockforce attended within 30 minutes and got the customer back inside for a sit down and a cup of tea.

Unable to open the front door in Wychwood Park, Crewe, CW2 - 2nd August 2022

A concerned client called upon Lockforce Crewe when the mechanism on his front door failed leaving in jammed shut. Lockforce soon got the door open again and had the door working perfectly in one visit using stock from the large inventory carried on the van.

Lockforce locksmith Crewe were called by a Landlord who’s tenant couldn’t get in to their front door. Realising that the mortice lock had collapsed internally Lockforce got the door open and the client back in the house.

Door Failure in Shavington, CW2 - 16th June 2022

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe received a call from an anxious customer who wasn’t able to lock his front door. Lockforce diagnosed that poor door alignment had caused the Multi Point Locking mechanism to fail.  Lost keys on a store room in Crewe, CW1 - 8th June 2022

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe were called in when the keys to a store room containing the electrical box were lost and access was needed urgently so that contractors could access the electricity supply. Lockforce attended within 30 minutes and got the door open straight away. New snap safe lock supplied with 5 keys and the work on site was able to continue.

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe were called out by a very local man who need his front door repaired on his family home. After speaking with the man we found out he was born and had lived on the same street his whole life. We attended and found the issue was surrounding a failed mechanism in the door and the spindle had collapsed. This was an easy fix which we were able to perform on site there and then.

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe were called out to help rescue a couple locked in their bedroom. We attended within 20 minutes, gainted entry through the front door and eventually into their bedroom. On this occassion we fitted a new lock to the front door. Another relieved and safe client.

Dog snaps key in lock in Crewe, CW1 - 12th January 2022

Lockforce Locksmith Crewe recieved a call from a family after their new puppy had snapped the key in their front door. We were able to attend within 5 minutes and extracted the key from the lock and installed an Ultion anti snap lock as a replacement cylinder. The same week we had a call from the same local family to say their puppy had now snapped the key on the back door. We attended the same day and fitted a new lock to the back door.
